At this point ARMA took control of the 2 toll projects (regional mobility authorities were given the right to decide to carry out toll projects in their region by the state legislature). In January 2007 an assessment was put forward and the FHWA authorised TxDOT to build the 281 tollway from Loop 1604 to Borgfeld. As a direct result, TxDOT and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) made an agreement to perform an additional environmental assessment (after four had already been performed). The project was suspended in 2006 after construction work damaged a sewer pipe. The bid was accepted with construction beginning on the Sonterra to Stone Oak section in December 2005. Zachary and Cintra of Spain put in a voluntary bid to build the 2 tollway projects in return for a 50-year toll concession. The construction was due to begin in 2003 but was halted due to a major cost increase. TxDOT announced plans in 2000 to upgrade the 281 to six lanes from Loop 1604 to Stone Oak Parkway and to build an overpass at the Borgfeld intersection. In the 1980s, the 281 was upgraded from a four-lane divided highway to a six-lane freeway in a section north of Loop 1604, although a lot of the road remained with four lanes. Details of Texas’s 281 North Toll project Short-term fixes that did not require environmental clearance were immediately undertaken. In February 2008, ARMA employed a consultant to prepare an EIS. TxDOT then uncovered a possible problem with an endangered species study and brought it to light in court.Īs a result, in October 2008, with the design phase 30% complete, the project was put on hold for a further three to four years until the environmental studies could be repeated under the leadership of Alamo RMA. In February 2008 a lawsuit was filed against the project by environmental groups Texans Uniting for Reform and Freedom (TURF) and Aquifer Guardians in Urban Areas (AGUA). Based on the final EIS, a preferred alternative will be selected in 2013. The EIS is scheduled for completion by 2012. The project is currently on hold pending the completion of a new Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The construction work started in February 2011. It was, however, delayed as a further environmental review was required. In May 2008 Cibolo Creek Infrastructure Joint Venture, led by equity partners Fluor Enterprises, Inc and Balfour Beatty, was chosen to design and build the project, along with local firms HDR Engineering, Raba-Kistner Consultants, Guerra DeBerry Coody, Donze Lopez Public Affairs, Vickery & Associates, Bain Medina Bain, AIA Engineers and Pinnacle Consulting Management Group.Ĭonstruction was due to begin in late 2008 / early 2009 on a section from Loop 1604 to Marshall Road, with completion estimated for late 2010. The two-phase project is being run by the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority (ARMA), which has been working with the Texas Dept of Transportation (TxDOT) since 2007. "The Road Not Taken" reads conversationally, beginning as a kind of photographic depiction of a quiet moment in yellow woods. The meter is basically iambic tetrameter, with each line having four two-syllable feet, though in almost every line, in different positions, an iamb is replaced with an anapest. With the rhyme scheme as 'ABAAB', the first line rhymes with the third and fourth, and the second line rhymes with the fifth. The poem consists of four stanzas of five lines each. Thomas was killed two years later in the Battle of Arras. Thomas took the poem seriously and personally, and it may have been significant in Thomas' decision to enlist in World War I. After Frost returned to New Hampshire in 1915, he sent Thomas an advance copy of "The Road Not Taken". Thomas was indecisive about which road to take, and in retrospect often lamented that they should have taken the other one. One day, as they were walking together, they came across two roads. Thomas and Frost became close friends and took many walks together. The story concerns a field biologist working at "Trench Park" named Radnal vez Krobir. The Mediterranean Basin thus remains dry to the present day in this time line, as a vast sunken desert called the Bottomlands, averaging nearly two kilometers below mean sea level, with summer temperatures reaching well above 40 C and with little or no rainfall. When you search on the PlayStore about the best free DJ apps for Android, no doubt that you will have hundreds of options. Best DJ Apps for Android to Boost Your DJ Music Mixing Experience Fill target containers with diluent: Once you have determined the diluent, fill the tubes or wells that you will use to set up the serial dilution with the desired amount of diluent (Figure 3, Step 1).Many compounds can be mixed with distilled water, but for bacteria or cells, for example, a fresh culture medium should be used. Determine the diluent: First of all, you need to choose the proper diluent for the substance that you want to dilute. While the possible applications of serial dilutions are very varied, the method itself always follows the exact same steps: This means that you will get to a manageable concentration of 100 bacterial cells per milliliter in 7 dilution steps, using only 63 milliliters of diluent. Diluting one milliliter of this dilution in nine milliliters of diluent will allow you to obtain a bacterial concentration of ten million cells per milliliter (Figure 1, Step 2), and so on. After diluting one milliliter of the sample with one billion bacterial cells per milliliter in nine milliliters of diluent, you will get a concentration of one hundred million bacterial cells per milliliter (Figure 1, Step 1). 2 An alternative and more practicable approach is to perform a serial dilution. However, in order to get to such a low concentration from a sample with one billion bacteria per milliliter in one step, you would need to dilute one milliliter of the sample in 10,000 liters of diluent. This is why you have to dilute a small portion of your bacterial culture until you get a more easily countable concentration of 30 to 300 bacterial cells per milliliter. As every milliliter of media could contain a billion bacteria, it is impossible to count them in such high concentrations. Imagine that you have a bacterial culture tube, and want to know how many bacterial cells are growing in it. Serial dilutions are routinely used in microbiology to estimate the number of microorganisms in a sample with an unknown concentration. Applying steadily increasing and decreasing values across multiple notes can create a smooth shift between two extremes, adding a subtle motion to a passage’s tone or, with more extreme modulation as on Lamar’s 2017 song “Pride,” continuously moving from male to female and back to reflect a deeper lyrical meaning. Apply a shift to a whole passage to manipulate its overall tone, or edit individual notes to add variety and movement in your parts. Select a note and use the formant tool to pitch the formant frequency up or down by a number of cents. Melodyne can help you achieve this sound by use of the formant editor. This technique manipulates the “formant” frequencies of the vocal tract that characterize a voice’s timbre, shifting the frequencies up and down. Formant Shiftingįormant shifting, as heard on music by the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Zeroh, is one of the more exciting vocal effects to find recent use in pop music. This is easily done with convenient options to change tempo by simple ratio, found in the tempo region drop-down menus, or by manually dragging barlines to the proper place. Since automatic music analysis is still far from perfect, Melodyne may misidentify the pulse of the track at times, requiring you to fix it manually. In this way you can extract grooves and feel from your favorite existing recordings, match the groove of MIDI tracks to already-recorded audio, or the opposite quantize your audio to match the project grid. Melodyne will attempt tempo detection on any audio it analyzes, and if the tempo of the audio differs from the project tempo in your DAW, Melodyne creates a map that can be applied to the project tempo, so all the slight variations in tempo and timing will be shared by MIDI quantized to that map. Melodyne Editor or Studio versions allow users to tap into an under-appreciated aspect of the software’s feature set: mapping and extracting tempos. Optionally, you can quantize the pitches to a chosen scale or tempo to suit the rhythmic or tonal context of the music you are making, or tune them to play a melody of your own devising. Take this kind of sound, analyze it with melodyne in melodic or polyphonic mode and convert to MIDI for playback through a synthesizer. Sounds like birdsong, raindrops, and even sneakers squeaking on the court during a basketball game all produced pitched material outside of the conventional logic of music. In the search for new and inventive melodies we might find inspiration in pitched material that wasn’t intended for a musical context. Tuning Nonmusical Pitches to Make Melodies More drastic results can be obtained by analyzing material in Polyphonic mode, exporting the result to MIDI, and playing it back in a monophonic synthesizer. The resulting sudden octave jumps, rhythmic displacements, and ornamental embellishments lend a glitchy, unpredictable feel to synth or instrument parts. One of my favorite creative uses of Melodyne is to record guitar or a synthesizer sequence, analyze it with Melodyne, and make use of the imperfections in the analysis to generate fresh material. Generating Novelty in MaterialĪs incredibly powerful as Melodyne is at analyzing pitch, it is and probably can never be completely flawless sometimes harmonics are mistaken for fundamentals or vice versa, sometimes noise is mistaken for pitched material. Set the algorithm to Melodic or Polyphonic mode, depending on the audio you’re analyzing and the effect you’re seeking, or leave it in Percussive mode to extract the rhythms from an audio source to apply to a percussion part. Melodyne will try to guess at the nature of the source audio to tune its algorithm, so nonmusical audio may be analyzed as percussion. Film dialogue, street noise, and casino floors are among the wide range of sources that can be used to generate unpredictable, aleatoric, or naturalistic musical material. Composers have already used Melodyne to analyze the pitch and rhythmic content of speech to create music reflecting the cadences of conversation. Melodies and Rhythms from Non-Musical Sourcesįeeding non-musical audio into Melodyne’s analysis engine can help inspire unique material. In this article we will explore some of these and hopefully point the way to other possibilities. As effective as it is in this capacity, Melodyne’s capabilities allow for a range of other creative uses outside of simply correcting mistakes in performance. Celemony’s Melodyne is a highly sophisticated pitch analysis and correction software suite known mainly for its use in tuning vocals. Be sure to replace with your actual VHD path. Below is an example where we use this command, and also output the disk path. Be sure to run this command with administrator privileges. To do this, you first need to mount the VHD into Windows using the Mount-VHD command in Windows. You can also mount virtual hard disk files (VHD) into WSL using wsl -mount. WSL from the Microsoft Store introduces a new argument to directly mount a VHD: wsl -mount -vhd Once you have identified the partitions you want to mount, run this command on each partition: wsl -mount -partition -type This will output the detected filesystem type (under the TYPE="" format). If you don't know the type of filesystem of a disk or partition, you can use this command: blkid For example, /dev/sdb3, is the partition number 3 of disk sdb.Įxample output: NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT Inside Linux, a block device is identified as /dev/. This will display the available block devices and their partitions. Once attached, the partition can be listed by running the following command inside WSL 2: lsblk (In the case of our example, the is \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE*. This will make the disk available in WSL 2. List and select the partitions to mount in WSL 2 - Once the disk is identified, run: wsl -mount -bare The disks paths are listed after 'DeviceID', usually in the \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE* format. If you have a disk that you aren't sure what file format it is in, or what partitions it has, you can follow the steps below to mount it. Mount the disk - Using PowerShell, you can mount the disk using the Disk path discovered above, run: wsl -mount Usually under the \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE* format. The disks paths are available under the 'DeviceID' columns. Identify the disk - To list the available disks in Windows, run: GET-CimInstance -query "SELECT * from Win32_DiskDrive" In this simplest case, if you have a disk that doesn't have any partitions, you can mount it directly using the wsl -mount command. You can join the Windows Insiders Program to get the latest preview builds. You will need to be on Windows 11 Build 22000 or later to access this feature. You can't mount the Windows installation disk. wsl -mount always attaches the entire disk even if only a partition is requested. The WSL 2 mount command does not support mounting a disk (or partitions that belong to the disk) that is currently in use. Administrator access is required to attach a disk to WSL 2. The fourth set guides us through the music that arrived as they began working on the record that would become Tommy. The third disc is a collection of related studio material: outtakes, alternate versions, isolated elements. The first two discs are your basic mono and stereo versions of the album, tacked with familiar addendum from previous reissues. The dark-horse favorite in their catalog, The Who Sell Out is the latest recipient of a Super Deluxe Edition, spanning five discs, two 7" singles, and a book of essays and ephemera. Even if the radio-broadcast structure mostly crumbles after side one, the songs form another landmark in the Who’s catalog: the moment before 1969’s Tommy solidified their place in rock history, when they were scrappy enough to laugh at themselves but strong enough to write the music that would define their career. As a result, the concept also worked as a loving tribute to the institutions where the Who first found an audience. Cobbled together by their manager Kit Lambert, the pop-art experiment was released in December 1967, just months after the BBC introduced Radio One to replace pirate stations like Radio London. Rewind the tape-that’s it! Pad out the tracklist with a few radio jingles, arrange some product placements for the cover art, and we’ll call it The Who Sell Out. And then there was… some other stuff: a cover of “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” an instrumental called “Sodding About,” a story-song that slowly revealed itself to be a deodorant ad. (He even had the title to go with it: Who’s Lily.) There was “I Can See for Miles,” a sweeping anthem he imagined would be their next big hit. There was “Pictures of Lily,” a recent single he considered placing as the centerpiece. Exhausted and frazzled from a tour with Herman’s Hermits in summer 1967, he surveyed the material that he and his bandmates-drummer Keith Moon, vocalist Roger Daltrey, and bassist John Entwistle-had amassed while the label grew increasingly impatient awaiting their third album. He was also among the first artists to strike gold from a total lack of inspiration. |
